Outreach Programs
Discovery Creek's outreach initiatives -
Anacostia
Initiative,
DC BayWatch,
Destination: Watershed,
and the
Rolling Rainforest
- serve children, teachers, and families directly in their communities. These
programs complement and enrich school curricula through inquiry-based, hands-on
activities, live animal encounters, and outdoor exploration.
Anacostia Initiative
Through Discovery Creek's Anacostia Initiative, the Museum provides innovative science and environmental education programs
to students and teachers at DC public elementary schools located east of the Anacostia River.
DC BayWatch
DC BayWatch is a six-part education program held each spring that gives underserved students a solid understanding of the interdependency of a watershed through hands-on learning, stream and watershed exploration, critical thinking activities, and live animal encounters.
Destination: Watershed
Destination: Watershed is a five-part series held in the fall that focuses on students' connections to their local watershed. In 2006, the program will connect elementary school students to their watershed by studying the animals that call its many habitats home.
Rolling Rainforest
Discovery Creek's
Rolling Rainforest enables the Museum and its message
of environmental stewardship to reach thousands of students and teachers who
face transportation challenges and tight operating budgets in the Washington,
DC area and beyond.
